LINEAGE & LEGACY

TRUTH & ANCESTRY

LINEAGE & LEGACY ✧ TRUTH & ANCESTRY ✧

Since the dawn humanity, we’ve sought to document our histories and experiences on cave walls, mapped amongst the stars, scrawled in etchings on parched soil and carried through the dust of our DNA.

Tattoos and their layered systems of meaning served as vehicles of expression. Each marking by a trusted scribe communicating our tribe, community role, accomplishments, transgressions - our energetic lineage on skin - through signs, symbols, totems, and scripts. In my ancestral culture (and many) knowledge, history and healing medicines became living memory of lineage, tradition and imprints of our experiences.

The sacred practice and process of receiving a marking is deeply intertwined with healing practices, spirituality and the ethos of ritual and ceremony. Rooted in communion - beginning with a shared community experience - encouraging connection to the soul during this rite of passage and to the wider collective…binding to one another through offering support, a sense of belonging, mutal exchange and charged space received during the (at times) painful process.

What was a vanishing approach to art as an expression of empathy and compassion is finding its people again. Colonialism and culture washing deems ancestral approaches to marking as subversive acts. However, in this moment, together we take action and agency to speak bless our bodily terrain with truths of our journeys between spirit and earth.

Here, we translate meditations of spoken/unspoken language of feeling, passage, presence, courage and becoming onto the temple of the body. Delivering talismans of ink and intention with utmost respect. For some these breathing symbols will be elemental…armour and protection, for others - invitations of love held in hymn, prayer and belief, and for others still…the chant of memories, tribe, victories, defeats…the inflection of imperfect, wonderous life.

Sacred Marking
Pathways

  • After an initial consultation (where we might traverse topics such as life path, culture/cultural reclamation, chosen/blood family, personal symbolism and meaning among other subjects), The Rite of Passage is a ritual in which a talisman is meditated upon/dream journeyed over a period of time to adorn your soul skin. The foundation of this ritual takes place over a 2+ day stretch - dependent on the size of the talisman that is created and committed to. During the first day interval, we share a visualization ceremony in your personal space to establish trust, call, honour and give offering to your ancestry, beingness, and the path that we are mutually creating before you (cycle of past/present/future).

On the second day following (and subsequent days, if needed) we consent to initiate formal marking during which I will be focused for the entirety of this process on channeling purpose and love into marking your soul skin.

This is a deeply bespoke and opening experience and, as such, each talisman is crafted to anoint and live in form/contour specific to a chosen part of the body. (Translation: No flash tattoos). All considerations including herbal tea blends, ethically sourced plant medicines, colour, elements, scents and language (verbal and musical) will be tailored to set the meta space, your mindset and the steps following to stillness or instigate movement.

NOTE: You will be asked to refrain from using your phone/any electronics for the duration of your ritual. If you would like a close relation present to photograph portions of the second day marking process, you may do so, however - this will be your responsibility to organize.

  • Similar to The Rite of Passage pathway, The Totem process begins with an initial overview consultation - during which we will lay the groundwork for the purpose and concept that is the foundation of your marking. Our discussion will inform a period of meditation/dream journeying that will be undertaken to determine how to energetically move forward with the design of your Totem.

In some cases, the Totem (as an element) will solely serve as an identifying mark, tapestry or lexicon reflective of your personal narrative and, in others, support a deeper talismanic purpose - the meaning of which may come in revelation following prior exploration through your personal meditations, Tarot Ritual or Energy Dialogue work, if you so choose.

During our time together, I encourage you to embrace sitting (and, blissfully, in some cases…sleeping) with the vibration, emotions, memories and energies that arise during the process. If you find yourself in this liminal translation with me, there is a reason for it and I will do my best not only to hold space for you, but also to create room for your intentions.

NOTE: You are encouraged to refrain from using your phone/any electronics for the duration of your marking process.

  • The Maharlika ritual is offered specifically to BIPOC/Mestizo/Mixed souls who identify with the need to approach the act of marking the skin as a form of (re)claiming their narrative following deconstruction of conditioning imposed by colonization and (re)construction of identity as a result of and within diaspora.

While “Maharlika” is a pre-colonial Tagalog word from the Philippines referring to a warrior class of peoples, it borrows its roots from Sanskrit - meaning ‘of wealth, knowledge or ability’. There is a truth faced by the global community of BIPOC/Mestizo/Mixed peoples - we fight, search, challenge, struggle and celebrate each day to define our identities in spite of/against/alongside, to unearth where histories have been hidden or erased, much like tattoos - we make connections out of pieces…because there is a desire to know for ourselves what we are made of, where we came from…to know the richness of our parent cultures - despite what is gatekept or what we are told, taught or sold.

For instance, much of the knowledge and practice that my bones carry was denied to me from one of my parent cultures but invited and given by a different culture that adopted me. Both are instances of how two cultures chose to interpret the survival of their heritage within one person.

Within this medicine process, our initial consultation will dive into the nature of your heritage story, family journey and evolution, your people(s), your culture(s) and how we can properly represent this meaning on the tapestry that is the collective of your skin and spirit body. This discussion will inform the meditation/dream journey that will define both the form of your marking as well as the materials connected to your historical roots which we will incorporate into the path of offering and connection ceremony that will accompany and open our sitting together.

NOTE: You are encouraged to refrain from using your phone/any electronics for the duration of your marking process.

  • The Sigil Marking pathway, focuses on creation of a protective sigil (drawn, sealed and marked) based on connection, purpose and energetic flow of intention. While requiring clarity, self truth and direct will from the soul to manifest a specific outcome - it is perhaps the most passive of offered marking processes.

Prior to marking, during an initial consultation - our discussion will get to the heart and purpose of why you are seeking this simple, yet powerful statement in skin. Once this purpose is distilled, I will transform the letterforms of your will through the traditional process of creating a sigil into a unique protective mark.

Following the ceremony, you will receive a paper representation of your mark to burn, bury or flow to close the ritual space.

“There is great beauty and rebellion in revering our own skin as sacred space. Prejudice wrenches us between tensions of perception vs. the truth of who we are. Reclaiming voice in the absence of spoken word, through skin, can be an act resonant strength.”
